Breakthroughs like this can have massive impact on our daily lives --the only way technology can continue to exponentially improve is if the science of how we manufacture the electronic infrastructure (data centers, sensors, compute power) advances first. The semiconductor industry obsesses over Moore's Law ending yet hesitates to try anything truly radical --I am reminded of an Oren Harari quote I recently saw "the electric light did not come from the continuous improvement of candles."

To compound what seems to be total risk-aversion inherent in these large companies, analysts and economists are particularly fickle to the semiconductor industry.  The biggest companies' leaders are forced to optimize for the short term value and then cannot make big bets like tripling down on the next great processes that will completely replace industry standards.
